Mr Jafaru Abu is a Consultant Gynaecologist in Nottingham. He subspecialises in gynaecological cancer surgery (gynaecological oncology). He has substantial experience in providing treatments for a spectrum of gynaecological cancers and is renowned for his ability to perform complex gynaecological key-hole operations, including surgery for women who are morbidly obese.
Mr Abu privately practices as a gynaecologist at The Park Hospital Nottingham (BMI Park Hospital) and Nottingham Spire Hospital (Nottingham Spire Hospital). His NHS practice is based at the Nottingham City Hospital Campus of Nottingham University Hospitals. He has an interest in minimally invasive gynaecological surgery and was one of the first gynaecologists in the UK to perform Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS), a “scarless” procedure.
Mr Abu was instrumental in the introduction of total laparoscopic (keyhole) hysterectomy (TotLapHyst) for the management of endometrial cancer at the Nottingham University Hospitals. He was later to introduce the same approach in the surgical management of cervical cancer (cancer of the neck of the womb) – Total Laparoscopic Radical Hysterectomy (TLRH). He also regularly performs keyhole fertility preservation surgery for early stages of cervical cancer in young women who desires such procedure – Total Laparoscopic Radical Trachelectomy (TLRT). Also regularly performs extensive operations for advanced ovarian cancers aiming to achieve complete tumour resection. This is now ample evidence to support the fact that women with advanced ovarian cancers live longer if initial surgery is able to achieve complete tumour resection. This procedure is currently only performed by a handfull of gynaecological oncologists in the UK as it requires a more advanced surgical oncology training. To ensure his clinical skills are up to date, Mr Abu regularly attends national and international seminars both as a delegate and a speaker; and on his visits to other hospitals, he provides mentoring for other consultants in advanced keyhole surgery in gynaecology, in particular total laparoscopic hysterectomy and total laparoscopic radical hysterectomy.
International gynaecology expert
Committed to the training of other consultants, Mr Abu is involved in organising clinical skill workshops that are used to train other doctors in the skills needed for advanced laparoscopic surgery in women. In 2007, Mr Abu established a bi-annual Masterclass Course, which has become popular both nationally and internationally. In the course, Mr Abu teaches other consultants about the skills used in total laparoscopic hysterectomy and other minimally invasive procedures in gynaecology. Also a member of an international faculty of experts in IRCAD Minimally Invasive Training Centre in Strasbourg, France.
